Research publication ethics seminars
Two online seminars about research publication ethics were conducted by Dr. Manal Koura, Professor of Primary Health Care in December 2021 and February 2022 for faculty members from different Egyptian universities.
The seminar covered the author’s and journal’s responsibilities about publication ethics and how to deal with misconduct.
Among author’s responsibilities, the criteria for authorship were discussed, in addition to the importance of declaring any source of research funding or conflict of interest. Fraud, plagiarism, and double publication were also covered. The pros and cons of preprint archives were discussed. The researchers were also oriented about the list of predatory journals to avoid submitting their articles to such pseudo-journals.
Among journal’s responsibilities conflict of interest among reviewers was discussed, as well as the importance of confidentiality of reviewed articles till officially published. The ethics of advertising in scientific journals was also discussed.
The action that should be taken by the journal in case of misconduct was presented, such as rejection of the paper, retraction of the paper, banning of the researcher from publishing in the journal or referral to the institution the author is affiliated with.
